It's Thursday, and that means it's time for another fantastic installment of This Newf Reviews! In honor of my new brother, Pooka, today's review is of the best teething toy my mama found while I was a puppy.
Puppies teethe just like babies, but unlike babies when they teethe they can get into a lot of trouble! Our new teeth HURT when they come in, and itch, and so we chew on things we probably shouldn't. If you as a dog owner wish to prevent your puppy from teething on your dining room table leg, or on the couch, then you have to provide teething toys and treats. Don't forget to WATCH your puppy so that when he chews on something you don't want him to, you can correct him and direct him onto one of his approved toys. Okay! So all that said, here's the teething toy that I loved most!
This Newf Reviews: the Chilly Bone!
It is a canvas bone stuffed with sponge. All your people have to do is soak it in water and stuff it in the freezer. The canvas feels good on our gums and the sponge freezes so that when we chew on it is cold and crunchy. The Chilly Bone comes in two sizes, so even very small puppies can enjoy them!Company Standards: The Chilly Bone is made by Multipet International. You can read their mission statement on their webpage!
Drool-o-Meter Rating*: I give this toy a One-Slinger. It's not a treat so it's a bit hard to get the juices flowing, but I did LOVE it while I had it and certainly it helped prevent me from chewing on chair legs!
Alternatives: My mama lost my Chilly Bone while I was still in need of it, so she learned to improvise...ice cubes work and are fun to play with, but the best alternative to the Chilly Bone that we found was to take a clean rag, soak it in water, twist it into a pretzel, put it in a ziplock bag and freeze it. If you're having trouble getting your puppy to chew on it, try soaking it in low-sodium chicken broth instead of water! Most pups can't resist that. Mama also took treats and froze them inside ice cubes...those were REALLY fun, and a good treat for hot summer days whether you're a puppy or not.
*Newfy Drool-o-Meter Key:
Dry Mouth: Zero interest or appreciation for the item in question - not worth drooling over.
Minicicles: Just the tiniest hint of a droolcicle starting at either corner of the mouth. Drool worthy? Barely.
One-Slinger: The treat is good - good enough to get the juices flowing but not so good that I would offer it as an aperitif on a first date with Sunshade.
Two-Slinger: Now we're talking! The drool is even, it's sling-able, and it has been earned.
Simultaneous-Ropes-to-the-Floor: The highest honor I, or any newf, can offer a treat or toy. So delicious and delightful that the drool flows like water.

Yes, I agree - a one-slinger! I loved my Chilly Bone, but even better was the basted braided chew! http://charliegolden.blogspot.com/2005/01/charlies-new-legal-toy.html
Heck I still love those things!!

Nanook, I saw you on my friend Oscar's blog, you sure are a cutie, and what good advice for teethies.
I never had the official bone, but my Mummy did the clean wet rag in the freezer, and the ice cubes. I also really love a bunch of big keys that are for teething puppies. I'm a big 7month old puppy now and have all my shiny new teeths, but I still love the keys. Come see my new teeth on my blog, and leave your picture on my slide OK? Pleeeze, kissies Asta
Hey Nanook, I can see Pooka's pictures now. Wow, what a complete cutie pie!
Mmm, ice cubes. Mum said she never thought of putting treats inside so she'll try that. She'll just need to make sure no-one puts them in their G & T!

Darn! I wish we had known about this Chilly bone when Mitch was teething! He's got his new choppers now!
Thanks Nanook!
Love ya lots,
Maggie
Hi Nanook...
I loved my chilly bone...and I love ice cubes. Thanks for the idea to put snackies in the ice cubes I think that will be fun this summer.
Lots of Licks, Ruby
Everyone at my blog has been saying how adorable your new brother is. Doesn't surprise me since he is YOUR brother.
I love ice cubes in the summer. I bet ice cubes made of chicken brother would be better.
wally.
A new POOKA??? How wonderful...great news!!!
HE IS SO CUTE!!! I am sure you will help teach him how to be a Super Newf!
I loved the ol' Chilly Bone, too! Between that and my red Booda Ball (which Momma used to toss in the freezer, too)I was good to go!
I love your drool-ometer, great idea. Candies Ginger gets the two-ropes-to-the floor award. You should try some!
Charlie - I love a good braided chew too. Mama has laid in two for the new puppy's arrival.
Asta - Your new teeth are precious! I love them.
Oscar - Yes I don't think a doggy treat would improve a G&T. But they are a fun way to wile away summer days...
Maggie - it's still a good toy for hot summers since it keeps the tongue wet and cold! Not JUST for teething!
Ruby - You're most welcome. And pretty.
Wally - awww you put his picture on your blog that's adorable! Thank you!
Jasper and Jack - You betcha!
Orion - I have! Papa bought some. I was not certain what to make of them at first but I finally ate one.
