Mama's Monday: Touch

Only it's really Wednesday. Sorry about that!

Mama says this is my Tropicana look. I have no idea what that means.

In class Pooka has been learning the command "touch" - which means he bops his nose on mama's palm. It's a useful command because it can be turned into a game to relieve stress, and all you need is one of your hands, which, chances are, you will have with you. Haroo!

To teach it, have your dog on leash and then stick your hand out, palm flat and towards the dog, at some distance away. Dogs are usually pretty curious and your puppy should likely walk towards your hand to sniff it. If your dog doesn't seem to be sniffing your palm, try moving the palm AWAY from him, and wiggling your fingers, etc. If all else fails, rub a little cheese or hotdog onto your palm. As soon as your dog's nose comes into contact with palm, give him his marker word and a treat. Repeat until the dog grasps the concept of hand + nose = treat, then begin to add the command word, "touch," to the behavior as the dog is doing it. Make sure you use both hands, and change the way your hand looks, fingers pointing out to the side, or straight down, or hand held flat palm towards floor so that your dog doesn't create the idea that he only touches your palm when it looks only one way. Teaching this command is great because it allows you to give your dog a target for jumping games (which relieve stress) AND it is a cornerstone of a lot of tricks like teaching your dog to turn on a light switch or close the refrigerator.

We're also continuing to work on his recall, playing games like "round robin"...two or more people stand a small distance away from each other and one calls the puppy - puppy gets cookie when he goes to the person, then the second person calls the puppy and the first stops feeding, puppy gets cookie when he goes to second person. To increase the difficulty, increase the distance between you, and also have the first person continue to offer cookies while the second person calls the puppy away to them. Don't use the word "come" since the puppy isn't on leash and you can't make certain he obeys the call, just use the puppy's name.

We all like the Tropicana look! You could call it the 'beehive', too! Dishwasher is running as we type! And you know out of the huge backlog of culinary items, the first to go in was the flat beater.

Ooooh, I like the idea of that command. I've been trying to find tricks to teach Louka, even though he's not a puppy anymore, and I think that's the next one we'll work on.

I LOVE that touchy game!! Mom uses it all the time to teach me other things. It's pretty useful. And I get treats when I touch the hand.

Doesn't get any better than that.

OK, me and Mom need to work on touch. I think we will start today...she's be slacking on the training lately.

I love the tropicana look...I'm not sure what it means either, but it looks good on you Nanook!

Lots of Licks, Ruby

Oh neat! Another trick to learn! I'll tell Mom about it and hopefully we'll start trying it out real soon. I've just mastered roll over, so its time to work on something new :o)

By the way... speaking of neat tricks I finally was able to post my swimming video on my blog. Check it out!

We are so jealous, so jealous that Nanook is going to be a television star and live in a mansion with his own private 40 square mile lake and have 12 servants bring him fresh meat 20 times a day. He's so handsome, wise and well behaved that he deserves it. Will you send your jet to bring us for visits, buddy? Tank wants to be the spokesdoggy for JW pet toys.

OOOOO. I'm going to work on this one with, Lucy. I think it could be a little more tricky with her because she's a golden and if you know goldens, you know you can never get far enough away from them to keep them from touching. LOL!

I love Newfoundlands. Haven't had one for years but they are just as gentle and loving as the Goldens.

I'm linking you at the field. Anyone who loves dogs is automatically, "my people".

Hi Nanook, is that flowers on your head? They look pretty.

I think I will like the 'touch' trick. Especially with treats in hand. =P

Beautiful picture, Nanook! You must be working hard to balance that big flower on your head...maybe the ability comes naturally to you since you have a big & handsome forehead...I think you should start balancing bigger items, like chairs & stuff...Tell Pooka to keep practicing all his tricks...he'll be just as smart as you! The touch trick is a good one.

Oh, I can do this trick 'Touch' too but I'll only touch my mommy's palm when it's not too far away from my nose. If it's high up above my head, I'm too lazy to jump up to reach it! But I think I've seen you doing this before Nanook, is it still in your old posts? I think it was you right...You jumped up & touched your mommy's hand, am I right?

Love licks,
